The frail health of the president of the federal republic of Nigeria has continued to be a source of concern for her citizens. This concern is understandable, as the country is a little shy of economic collapse and needs the right leadership to steer the country away from her economic turmoil. However, Aso rock has consistently had the man at the helm of affair consistently visit the United Kingdom, definitely not for advancing strong political ties but for medical treatments. For this reason, once again we are compelled to ask; Is there no balm in Nigeria? Is there no physician there? Why then is the president of the most populous black nation on earth seeking refuge in the United Kingdom?
The consistent visit of Mr. Buhari to the United Kingdom is a slap on the intellectual credence of this country. The problem with our health care system is definitely not the absence of capable hands and best minds in the system, but the lack of political will on the part of government officials who are more interested spending the country’s money on medical visits for the slightest indication of fragile health. This obnoxious act should be detested with all sense of dignity. We cannot build a strong and independent country on the shoulders of medical visits, when these millions of Naira can be channelled to constructive and conscious rejuvenation of our health care system. I sincerely think our leaders are yet to learn from the demise of Musa Yar’Adua and Stella Obasanjo etc. on foreign soil and I am scared that if the system is not placed in the right perspective, a repeat of these awry experiences might end up becoming a norm.
Mr. President we are on the wheels of change, times are changing, the economy is bad and your citizens need clear leadership. If you are not in the position to give that, it will be in our best interest you vacate the seat of power, to enable you pay more attention to your health and for the country to have a stable leadership that we can hold accountable. This country is bigger than any one man and simultaneously your health is of utmost importance to the country. Therefore, we do not need a political game with the constitution on the grounds of unstable health. We need a decisive stand on this matter. I am someone who strongly believes in your political leadership and would love to see you fulfil your campaign promises. However, leadership is not about being in charge, it is about the state of the mind.
I wish you quick recovery.
